BY ANDREW MORKES, FOUNDER OF NATURE IN CHICAGOLAND
To catch the bats
we raced the drooping sun
rocketing away from
gas stations and strip malls,
up the wrinkled mountainside,
that glittered like organic
jewels in the waning light.
Reaching the orange-dappled summit,
we merged into rattlesnake-wary crowds.
Flickering specks burst
from the shadowed cavern.
Bats! One million strong,
plucked away by kamikaze hawks
that fluttered across
the communion-wafer moon.
