Batwatching Near White City, New Mexico

BY ANDREW MORKES, FOUNDER OF NATURE IN CHICAGOLAND

rocketing away from
gas stations and strip malls,
winding
up the wrinkled mountainside,
past cacti
that glittered like organic
jewels in the waning light.

Flickering specks burst

Bats! One million strong,
plucked away by kamikaze hawks
that fluttered across
the communion-wafer moon.
